About the Project – NEW NAR

The NEW NAR action research project explores how alternative narratives can foster more inclusive and cohesive societies by challenging dominant representations of migration and cultural diversity.

The project addresses the growing need to counter exclusionary discourses that portray migration as a crisis or threat, reframing perceptions through participatory storytelling and community engagement.

Our Approach

We focus on the role of grassroots initiatives and intercultural intermediaries in fostering belonging and civic participation.

A key element of our work is targeting the “movable middle”—those who are neither strongly opposed nor fully supportive of migration—to foster constructive dialogue and reshape public attitudes.

Project Goals & Outputs

NEW NAR aims to bridge the gap between research and practice through several key deliverables:

  • Applied Research: identifying mechanisms and conditions that enable narrative shifts around inclusion.
  • Scenario Development Toolkit: practical guidelines and use cases for education, policy advocacy, and community initiatives.
  • Podcast Series: showcasing practices, voices, and insights from Malta and other European contexts.
  • Open Access Publications: contributing findings to both academic and practitioner-oriented fields.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: workshops and public events to ensure broad dissemination and sustainability.

The project adopts a participatory approach, co-designing its outputs with educators, community leaders, and migrant stakeholders.

Funding & Institutional Alignment

The NEW NAR project is funded by Xjenza Malta.

It directly contributes to Malta’s integration priorities and aligns with the EU’s Anti-Racism Action Plan, the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, and SDG 10 on reducing inequalities.
